Whimsical Dialogue

Just between you and me…

Joyce’s 21st Birthday June 27, 2008

Darling Joyce celebrates her 21st Birthday….

Once again, as with every year and every one of our birthdays, we reserve a meal on that day for each other… sisters who knew each other for almost half their lives; confidantes who supported each other through depression and exhilaration and most importantly, family, where we found unconditional love and acceptance.

I swear she is mad, even with the unconditional love that I have for her, Joyce is mad. First, she drank a 2-second Flaming Lamborghini- caused her to talk so much that her lips couldn’t keep up with her brain. She talked enough for all of us. So I sat there and watched her amusing monologue.

Secondly, after little provocation from Shan and I, she started running into the fountain and dancing and laughing and posing. Right in the middle of Clark Quay. It was damn funny. We tried. We tried to get her to take the bungy as her Great 21st Adventure. But she was not so dumb. Unfortunately.

I love Joyce =)

It has only been the second week of internship and I am feeling so worn out. I actually shudder at the thought of well- routined living. Well, that might sound unfair because I am actually enjoying Premier Law and I am taking well to the work, every piece of work is a good learning experience and its like laying my hands on expensive bags (o yes…I am a geek and a sucker for work). Siraj is awesome, he ensures that there is continuity in the work that he gives and I get to follow through a case from drafting to trial and then to meeting clients. Although the culture is very different from Harry Elias, both are similar in their relaxing and instructive atmosphere.

In HEP, I had two very good mentors, Miss Foo and Tien Hua and subsequently, I made a good friend in Shin Yi as well, where there is an amazing connection to Aloy, and she patiently hears my gripes and random email rants about absolutely everything.

That brings me to my little visit to HEP, primarily to talk to Miss Foo, to ambush Shin Yi abit, and to say Hi to the familiar faces there, and that little chat did ignite a little spark of enthusiasm and a warmth that only affirmation can bring. Wonderful caring advice from Miss Foo again, I have learnt three things that were sharable and some which were not (of which I will keep it in me).

The Shareables… First, people look at every little piece of work that you do and so you jolly well do it to perfection, even if it involves checking a million times and pretending that you only checked it once and it was already perfect. That leads back to the question of attitude; Miss Foo also said that she would rather hire a person with good attitude though legally unsound than a person with good grades but careless and lazy. Dressing well and perhaps maintaining a good figure is part of having the right attitude because the world is real, people look at you, they don’t want sloppy lawyers looking like they will do a shoddy case.

Secondly, it is important to do your work everyday with positivity and meticulousness, especially when a lawyer’s credibility is built on continued good work, before bosses and also judges. It is reality that women face more trouble juggling work, motherhood and wifehood and a good balance helps. Somehow it seems like we need more credibility. Sigh.

Thirdly, to maintain a successful marriage, it is no longer about puppy love or romance but true friendship and respect for each other, so says the most amazing matri lawyer. I really don’t want to get married, I want romance and love, but it also comes with it heartbreak and pain. So does a divorce what! But I have heard of so many long- lasting relationships and they are very inspiring, Shin Yi dated her husband for SEVEN years since law school, Miss Foo dated her husband when she was in hall; At Premier Law, both Chern Yang and Siraj dated for 7/8 years. Mr See Chern Yang called his girlfriend ‘perfect’.

Interesting thing is, she also thought me how to do a good body wave behind the HEP doors. My exotic dance really sucks and I find it damn funny that it sucks.

Sitting in that office and listening to her share made me think of what I want to be in ten years and I was looking at it. Graceful, warm, caring, shrewd, positive and successful, with a damn hot body.

Beijing Part 3 June 9, 2008

Finally, the Forbidden City! We left it to the second last day of our trip because we expected to spend the entire day combing the palace. Very disappointingly, many places were undergoing restoration and the smog was so bad. The pictures looked so awful with the smog and with every breath I took, I wondered how much bacteria and dust I was breathing in. In an odd coincidence, we met Walter Woon as he was leaving the Tianan Men, Winston caught up with him to say Hi.

It was the best Peking Duck I have ever had! We had the ‘extra lean braised peking duck’. The duck was served in strips and acts as the filling to a basket of almost translucent pankake served with 8 condiments (sugar, garlic sauce, plum sauce, scallions, cucumber, pickles, radish, and something I cannot remember). It was awesome and perfect.

On the very last day at Beijing, Winston, my Aunt and I went to the Summer Palace.

White marbled Circular Altar built in 1740 where the top tier symbolises heaven. The centre would be the Heavenly Stone where what you say sounds louder and is supposedly the closest to Heaven. I think I said something inane. Mmm…

Crowning structure of the whole complex, supposedly architecturally most magnificent in Beijing.

We went through so much just to watch the Champions’ League. It was the three day morning period for the Sichuan Earthquake and all the entertainment outlets were supposed to be closed. Not that I was really interested since I spent most of the time reading my book in the pub.

Very charming and quaint lakeside…

It was quite an odd moment to remember that we rented an electric boat in Lake Titisee last year as well. I liked China as much as I liked Europe (what I have seen of both that is). The flavour is just different but equally enticing.

We ordered an pricey pot of Pu’er and settled down to read beside the Qianhai.

Beijing Part 1 June 1, 2008

Our delightful and charming home in Beijing, it was a lovely place with friendly English-speaking staff and horrible schizophrenic shower.

We were at Tianan Men Square when China was having the national 3 minutes of silence for the Sichuan quake victims as part of the 3- day mourning period. For the 3 minutes, the cars all around stopped and people were standing beside their car, holding up signs and unidentifiable objects. At the end of the 3 minutes, the crowd surrounding the half- raised flag at the square were cheering, ‘zhong guo jia you’. mmm…

Photobucket

The square and the Mao Mausoleum which we had to deposit our bags to enter and walk around Mao’s corpse (which Winston thinks is fake). How morbid is that. Can you imagine one day when LKY dies, are we going to preserve hid body and enshrine him in a glass coffin and let millions of beady- eyed tourists oogle at his waxen features.

Overrated Great Wall engulfed by the sandstorm from the Gobi Desert. I am so so unfit that I took damn long to climb the wall.
