Dishing up the Middle East March 29, 2008

I knew what was going on at the Youth Service but I really didn’t know what was the take home message. I like an energetic service with gravity and clear message. I don’t like a service with too much showmanship, it prevents me from settling down and reaching the peace that I need after a tiring week.

We went to Holland V and chanced upon Al- Hamra Lebanese and Middle- Eastern Cuisine. On a weird note, it made me think of Lampy, who has escaped to the Middle East and sent me two postcards, one from Syria and the other from Israel.

Easter Sunday March 23, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — lifangyi @ 10:21 pm

‘Twas a productive Easter Sunday which started with church in the morning; continued onto a silly hunt for Cadbury Easter eggs at noon; a delightful lunch with jie jie; serious studying together at Great World Starbucks, where the awful boredom drove me to buy random nonsense which include a British Cosmopolitan, chocolate cupcake, fudgy cupcake and tiramisu from Gastronomia and a chicken pie for Grandma from Sweet Secrets. Apparently, Amanda and I discovered that stress causes fat to gather at the abs. In that case, the joy of shopping will make me lose weight and it will make my sister gain weight since I gave her all the cupcakes and bread that was bought.

Easter eggs make me smile. I got a huge-ass one from Hui Shan.

Easter eggs are always so cheery and pretty.

I tried coercing my sister to have the giant Easter egg sitting on my table so that we will have 35g of fats each but that brat has flatly rejected my attempt to share.

Me: I think that your mother really loves me.

Winnie: Yes, I know.

Me: She keeps asking me what I preferred (over dinner)

Winnie: Tell her you prefer her son

At that moment, this was really kissably funny….

Vanity Speaks March 18, 2008

Recently, I decided that I need to see my face as and when I think I need to see my face. I need a handbag mirror and I went looking for one.

Just when I need it, Chloe’s mum gave me a Heart-shaped mirror, so simple and shiny. But my face looks kinda distorted and seemingly too big for the mirror. The collection on Authentics.co.uk is quite unique if you need one as well. It is absolutely essential for checking new pimples and smudgy eyeliners.

I think that these designs are so so pretty. Maybe I need more than one.

‘Wooing women back to work’ March 18, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — lifangyi @ 2:50 pm

“HIS homemaker wife wants to work but hydraulic consultant C. Nadarajah is dead set against it.

‘My kids are still of school-going age, and if both my wife and I are out at work, who’s going to take care of their daily needs and make sure they wake up on time for classes in the morning?’ says the 52-year-old.

They have two daughters, aged 19 and 17, and a 16-year-old son.

He says his wife wants to get a job now that the children are older.

But he retorts: ‘I don’t buy that as a reasoning, because there’s nothing better than having a mother around to bring up the kids. If she’s out at work, and I’m out of town, the kids will go haywire.’”

Read that chauvinism on Straits Times’s ‘Insight’ section. That is the kind of attitude that feminists revolt against. There is so much substantive injustice in the male declaration that woman should stay at home and clean the toilet and take care of the children. It makes a woman sputter and stutter in anger due to speechlessness, at least it leaves me in that state. I am definitely not a feminist- I want a man to earn the bread, to take care of me and leave my paycheck alone so that I can buy Chanel bags, diamond trinklets, to pay for hair treatments, spas, weekly pedicures and manicures… BUT I don’t want to stay at home and take care of kids. Let me re- phrase, I want to do it if it is my choice and because I love my children, I do not want to do it only because some chauvinistic pig tells me to do it. If you want a wife to do that, get a maid! Hire a nanny! These men are taking away a female’s autonomy, as if she has breasts and therefore she must breastfeed right? She has a vagina and therefore she must give me sex?! My goodness! That is so annoying.

A woman, just like a man, has a right to choose her destiny and pursue her dreams. In the course of doing so, she might realise that there are things that are more important than her career. e.g. maternal bond with the children, comfort of her husband, organisation of the household. In that case, it is her right and her choice to re- organise her priorities and give up working. I wonder where do men get the idea that they have a God- given right to lord over women? Then again, they are really odd in that way, they like to brandish their ‘male genitalia’ everywhere, even at the dinner table. Like ‘I have it and therefore I must keep talking about it..you dick-head!’ It is funny and a tad baffling. I don’t hate men. I really don’t but that kind of mentality just bugs me. I actually love them quite a fair bit. Winston is a BEEEG chauvinist and it can be quite endearing at times…but it just bugs me…really does… mmmm…

Law Ball 2008 March 17, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — lifangyi @ 3:50 am

I am so proud. The event went beautifully as imagined despite all the sadness and hopelessness surrounding it. We had a great crowd and it was just fantastic. Everyone in the committee put in so so much. The night before, Dennis, myself and the emcees drove in from everywhere at 10pm just to go through the programs. It was so spontaneous and it makes me proud. Grace and her marketing team worked like mad to get the zouk and bra sponsors. Patrick and Weijia went mad. The pageant nannies had to bring the kids for hair, make- up and it was all worth it. Dougie and his team came up with a damn professional pageant. We had great posters and we also had Zhang Rui to settle all the technical details. I am so proud of law ball because we had the support of so so many people.

Internship March 15, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — lifangyi @ 5:32 am

I got a Drew internship. Yay! Was getting abit worried that I will end up slacking my holiday away. I hope that it will be as fun as being at HEP matrimonial. Somehow, I really love the people there. I love Miss Foo who takes time to email and care about my career choices. She reminded me again to go visit her before I head off to Bristol. A nice fuzzy feeling. I love Shin Yi, who is damn funny and warm. I miss Tien Hua who does proper mentoring. Drew seems slightly different. But the good thing is, Winston is going as well. That should make it doubly fun. Somehow, I also feel that Drew is more suitable for a person like him… Trial Advo finalist; Likes to talk alot; Top negotiator in class. I think I should find a nice cozy firm and practice with good work- life balance. Legal service… I really think that legal service is for me.
